CONCEPT:
Atamira Dance Company is New Zealand’s leading Māori contemporary dance company. Pango (“Black”) is based on the story of creation, from a Māori perspective. Imagery creates a sense of grandeur, an embracing of Māori mythology. Figures represent the forcing apart of Ranginui, sky father, and Papatūānuku, earth mother. Force justified text allows for random negative space, enhancing the central concept of being forced apart. Custom lettering and typography create a “weaving” theme as they emerge from the black, joining to become a greater whole and designed to work together as a repeating pattern. Mythologies woven in movement.
