To celebrate our talented and diverse membership, the TDC is profiling one member each month. We’re asking members the same five questions that will hopefully let us – and you – get to know them better. For August, typeface designer and organizer behind TypeThursday (the type design meet-up), Thomas Jockin, has been selected as member of the month.
Tell us a little bit about yourself – what you do and where you work
I’m a fool who’s in love with life. Plus, I’m a typeface designer and organizer of the letterform meet up, TypeThursday.
What is your favorite typeface? And why?
I don’t have an eternal typeface I loved always and forever. I am, at the moment, in love with Hobeaux Rococeaux by OHno Type Co. I love seeing a such bravery in completing a design direction so completely.
Where do you take your typographic/design inspiration from?
Conversations with people.
Garçon Grotesque used for Forage.
What is your all time favorite piece of design?
The work shown at TypeThursday meet ups. I absolutely love the work produced by everybody who attends; showing their work in progress, and revealing over time their development from unresolved to resolved forms. The design process itself is my favorite piece of design.
Where do you see the future in typographic design and typeface design?
It’s an golden age of type. Interest in type design is extremely apparent. New models of payment have come to market. Centers of education for type have grown exponentially. It’s a great time to be alive and practicing type. The question now for type design is: How can we create forms that serve our current condition?
What is your favorite aspect of being a TDC member? / What drew you to become a member of the TDC?
To be connected with people also interested in supporting typographic excellence
The TDC and Type Thursday are partnering this Fall. Meet up after work at the TDC HQ, for a drink or two, share work in progress projects, and catch up with people who love letterforms.
Previous work shown and discussion include: Lettering compositions, super family relationships, dutch italics and arabic type design. Register for these free crits here.
