In honor of Black History Month, the Type Directors Club and Monotype have joined forces to offer a $5,000 scholarship to students of color studying type design in the United States.
The TDC Superscript Scholarship, sponsored by Monotype, will be awarded to one person of color, currently in their junior year or first year of graduate school at a US college or university, who demonstrates exceptional talent and skill in the use of typography (excellence and promise in type design) across current media – print, digital, and beyond.
The $5000 scholarship is awarded to foster an understanding and appreciation of the significance of type and typography in the next generation of designers. The scholarship will be applied to the selected student’s final-year tuition that begins in September 2020 and concludes in June 2021.
The selected student will also receive a one-year student membership to the Type Directors Club, and will be invited to receive a certificate at the Type Directors Club annual awards evening in New York in July 2020.
Details about the application requirements and the application form are here.
The Monotype brand has been synonymous with type for more than 125 years. Today, Monotype is home to some of the world’s most widely used typefaces, seen everywhere on devices, the web, and in print.
The Type Directors Club sets the standards of typographical excellence in advertising, design and publishing, and hopes that the scholarship will encourage talented students to develop a love for typography and an appreciation of the significance of typography in the design process.
Good luck to those of you who decide to apply, and we hope everyone else will spread the word about this terrific opportunity!
