Of a letter, the part that extends below the baseline and to the right, as gjqy. Of the capital letters, Q and R have tails, though they need not extend below the baseline.

The process of repeating a contour or line by duplicating it and moving it in the x and y directions. The effect is often like that of an edged pen whose nib-corners maintain a similar relationship of the stroke edges as the translation does to the contours.
