Collins has also directed the creation of a provocative microsite that accompanies the new call for entries. This site, the Type Generator, creates typographic expressions with data drawn from your local environment. Just type a word, choose a style and a fill, and then five conditions in your location will affect the creation of letterforms that spell your word:
Traffic congestion in your area
Your city’s diversity of hashtags
Your city’s population density
Your local wind speed
Tap the space bar to secure your word, which can be saved to a gallery of typographic snapshots. These images capture relationships between individuals and larger systems and are metaphors for how design expresses the influences of time, place, and social interaction. Algorithms and context-aware computing help generate designs that reflect an ephemeral millisecond of our time. Data creates unpredictable new forms, and then the forms themselves become data, showing where it is windy, or where Twitter is popular. Wherever you can go online (except on your mobile device), the Type Generator turns your environment into letters.
Listen to four designers discuss generative type in this video by Collins.
The deadline for submission is Friday, December 13, 2013. If you submit by the early bird deadline of Friday, November 1, you will receive a substantial discount on the entry fee. As usual, all TDC members receive a discount on the fee. This year, all entries can be uploaded digitally.
Generate, Enjoy, Enter!
