St Bride Library : Fast Type, Slow Type
:: 2006 Conference Theme Announced

Following the success of the recent Friends of St Bride Library, Temporary Type Conference, we are pleased to announce the theme of the 2006 event is Fast Type, Slow Type.

The conference will take place 16–18 October, and in a break with tradition, will be held at the Custard Factory, Birmingham.

Call for Papers :

Fast Type may be that which is hastily made: a note scribbled on the back of an envelope, a telephone number jotted on the palm of the hand. Alternatively, fast type may be words produced for reading at speed, on the side of a car, or the tail of a plane. Perhaps fast type has been designed for immediate impact, but it may have been produced to be short-lived and seen just fleetingly. Then again, fast type may be that which is at the forefront of design.

Slow Type, on the other hand, is measured in design and considered in application. It may be type that lingers in our memory or persists in the type specimen books. Slow type may have been a long time in the making or enduring in use. It may also be type that makes us stop, slow down and stare.

Fast Type, Slow Type is open to individual interpretation and we welcome applications on this theme. We are looking not only for conference speakers, but also those who might wish to exhibit material or who would like to create graphic or art-installation on the theme of Fast Type, Slow Type.

It you have a suitable topic, we would be delighted to hear from you.
