St Bride's : Peril for Printing Library
25 September 2002, Clive Bruton reporting
Future of Famed library in doubt :
The St Bride Library, famed for its repository of English printing history and friendly and open accessibility, is under threat of dispersion into several parts due to lack of any funding from the City of London.
Funding options :
It was announced today at the St Bride's conference that the library is to lose all funding from the City of London at the end of the current financial year - ie the beginning of April 2003.
There are two proposals on the table :
- The library's archive to be given to the University of London - this will certainly lead to some break-up of the archive and very much reduced access to the remainder.
- The library to remain on the current site, funded by a redevelopment project on behalf of the St Bride's Institute.
The former is the current preferred option of the City, which needs to be persuaded otherwise.
