Description

This class will introduce you to the basic skills necessary for the wild journey into the mysterious world of type design.

Go past choosing fonts from the type menu to creating your own personalized typefaces. In this class you will expand lettering from a logo you designed to a full functioning font, scan type specimens or your own handwriting and make it into a digital font, learn the basics of designing and generating a typeface with FontLab Studio.

This class is for art directors, designers and illustrators who are familiar with Adobe Illustrator or Fontographer's drawing tools. Please bring your Laptop with Fontlab Studio and Scan Font 5 installed (demo versions allowed).

The demo will allow the user to save up to 20 letters unaltered; more will have a mark added to them.

About the Instructor

Matteo Bologna was born in Milan, Italy in 1965. At nineteen Matteo began working as an illustrator for various Italian magazines while attending the University of Architecture of Milan, which he abandoned after three years to dedicate his time to graphic design. It was at this time that he leased a Mac II, which was a very big deal in Milan. By virtue of being one of the first to have this kind of computer in Milan, he became a graphic designer in the eyes of his clients since it was known that the computer had the capabilities to do graphic design. This is when he shifted his business from illustration to graphic design, working for various clients. Curiously enough, his biggest client at that time was Apple Italia for whom he did a brochure using QuarkXPress 1.0.

In 1992 he moved to New York City to learn English and to acquire new experiences. After a few months of freelance jobs here and there (and, most importantly, after having learned how to communicate in English) Matteo became a senior designer with Ralph Appelbaum Associates, a prestigious museum design firm in New York. and worked there for almost six years.

In 1999, Mucca Design Corporation was born. Matteo started out by himself from a bedroom in his apartment. Mucca, which means "cow" in Italian, soon moved to an office space with two people formally inducted into the company. Since then the company has grown five-fold. Mucca is now the art directors and designers for Rizzoli, a book publishing company in Milan, BUR (the paperback imprint of Rizzoli) and HarperCollins Publishers in New York for their Business, Resource and Rayo imprints.

Mucca also designs book jacket covers for Simon and Schuster and Penguin Press. In one year Mucca has designed more than 700 book jackets.

After designing Pravda Restaurant in New York and Balthazar Restaurant and Bakery, Mucca has designed identities for restaurants all across the United States. Among others, they have worked with the Standard Hotel Restaurants in Los Angeles, Washington Square in Philadelphia and Raymond's in New Jersey. Other restaurants includes Pastis, Schiller's, Village and Locanda vini e olii.

Mucca has designed identities for André Balazs' Hotels AB (the owner of several "boutique hotels" across the United States); Matta, a fashion design company based in New York; Random House Trade paperback; Rizzoli and BUR.

In his spare time (which is now very scarce after the arrival of his daughter last February), Matteo designs typefaces.

Matteo is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Type Directors Club
