This is a rare opportunity not to be missed. Class size limited to 15 people. There will be a Dutch treat lunch break.
This one-day seminar will take place at the Rare Book and Speclal Collections Library of Columbia University, one of the best sources of typographic material in the United States. It will be an opportunity to see, examine and discuss several classic typefaces in connection with their historical models. We will look at original printed books from 1470 to 1905 and then compare the types in them to their current digital descendants. The printers and typefaces that will be covered are: Centaur‹Nicolaus Jenson, Arrighi, the Kelmscott Press and the Doves Press; Bembo and Poliphilus‹Aldus Manutius; Garamond‹Simon de Colines, Robert Estienne and Michael Vascosan; Baskerville‹John Baskerville; Bodoni‹Giambattista Bodoni; and Didot‹the Didot family.

Paul Shaw teaches typography, calligraphy, the history of graphic design, and the history of typography at design schools in the New York metropolitan area. He is the principal of Paul Shaw / Letter Design, a studio specializing in all forms of lettering, calligraphy and typography. He has designed 17 typefaces for LetterPerfect including Old Claude, Kolo, Bermuda and Donatello. With Peter Bain he co-curated Blackletter: Type and National Identity and co-wrote the accompanying monograph and catalogue. Paul co-led four Legacy of Letters tours of Rome, Florence and Tuscany with Garrett Boge from 1997 to 2000. He has received numerous grants and fellowships, including ones from the Smithsonian Institute, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Academy in Rome. He is currently trying to complete a biography of W.A. Dwiggins.
