:: Paul Shaw : New York City walking tour : Upper East Side and Harlem

Paul Shaw will lead a walking tour of lettering on the Upper East Side, Carnegie Hall, and Harlem.

Class Date and Time

11:00am – 2:00pm Sunday 19 October 2008

About the Walk

Since the fall of 2005 Paul Shaw has been leading walking tours of lettering in New York City for the Type Directors Club. There have been seven tours so far and each one has been different. The neighborhoods that have been covered so far are: the Financial District, Tribeca, Civic Center, Midtown, Lincoln Center, Morningside Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Long Island City, Greenpoint and Williamsburg. You may have missed out on one of these tours but New York is vast and there is a huge amount of fascinating lettering to be seen in parts of the city that many of us only know about from traffic reports.

The latest TDC lettering tour will cover parts of the Upper East Side and Harlem. It will begin near Hunter College and finish around 125th Street. As usual we will be looking at a wide mix of lettering styles (classical Roman capitals, Art Deco, versals, blackletter, grotesques, scripts), materials (stone, terracotta, metal, wood, plastic) and techniques (carving, casting, painting). The emphasis will continue to be the historical, social and architectural uses of lettering in New York as well as on aesthetics. These tours are an opportunity to see and learn more about the great city of New York.
