ATypI Leipzig 2000
Leipzig, Germany
Leipzig is a beautiful city, rich in the traditions of books
and publishing, well supplied with antiquarian booksellers. It was
the home of Bach, Wagner, Mendelssohn, and Goethe and has some of
the finest classical music and opera in Germany. The atmosphere in
the city is relaxed and the people are very friendly.
Events at the The Museum
The conference will be unique in offering many opportunities for
demonstrations and hands-on workshops amongst the richness and
diversity of the Werkstätten und Museum fur Druckkunst with its
collection of European and oriental type matrices, letter patterns
and steel punches. Among the oldest items in the collection is a
font of matrices by the famous punch cutter Jakob Sabon dating from
1572, as well as an original cutting of Old Schwabacher dating from
the middle of the 16th century.
Travel and accommodation
Hotel rooms are good, inexpensive and plentiful in Leipzig and a list
of ATypI conference hotels will be published shortly. Leipzig is well
served by rail and road connections with the rest of Germany and
continental Europe. Connecting flights can be made to world
destinations via Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich and Dusseldorf.
The social and cultural programme
A variety of special social and cultural activities are being organised
for delegates, including an opening reception in the historic
Moritzbastei, the ATypI auction, a Gala evening with a recital
of music by Bach in the Thomaskirche (where Bach himself was Kantor
for the last 27 years of his life) moving on to dinner in the world-famous Auerbachskeller, immortalised in Goethe's Faust. Coffee breaks
and lunches will be provided throughout the conference and there will
be plenty of opportunity for hanging out and socialising with friends,
peers and heroes, visiting Leipzig's many museums and libraries, or
searching for bargains in the city's antiquarian bookshops.
Hot metal & cool type
a programme exploring the scope from Hands-on Metal to Open Type
