3D Typography
Joe Zeff has illustrated hundreds of magazine covers, but freely admits that he cannot draw. He learned how to use 3D software while working as a magazine art director and developed an ability to create photorealistic images that convey information and ideas. Some of his best work is typography-driven, turning letters and numbers into iconic illustrations. His gleaming 5 is the face of the Fortune 500, and his studio recently designed commemorative covers for the 150th anniversary of The Atlantic Monthly and the 25th anniversary of PC magazine. Joe will discuss how he creates 3D letterforms, and the range of possibilities enabled by powerful software and — even more powerful — creative thinking.
About Joe
Joe Zeff is the president of Joe Zeff Design, Inc., a three-person studio in Montclair, NJ, that specializes in 3D illustration. The studio is best known for its magazine covers and illustrations, but also does quite a bit of corporate and advertising work. Recent projects include designing a 40-foot-wide bus wrap for Cirque du Soleil and creating a set of animated characters for M&Ms. Before opening his studio in 2000, Joe was the Graphics Director of Time magazine. He previously worked as a Deputy Art Director at Time, Presentation Editor at The New York Times, and in various design, editing and reporting positions at seven other newspapers. He has won lots of awards, but he's proudest by far of his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
