So what is TypeCamp Galiano, and what will happen there?
TypeCamp is for students, designers and type enthusiasts as an outlet to hone your skills, look at typography in new ways, free your mind from the printed page, and then readdress all of what you thought you knew. When you go to summer camp, you make friends, engage in a variety of activities, get away from authority, and come away with some merit badges. Same here, only everything is focused on typography.
After settling in to their cabins, everyone will meet up with Marian, Shelley and Ross on Sunday afternoon at 4:30pm for introductions, instructions and loose talk. After a dinner prepared by the Bodega Ridge chef, we will start Type Camp in earnest for a warm-up type quiz that will test your knowledge and set you up for some good typographic dreams on your first night.
Monday to Wednesday will be divided into activities which will culminate in a main project to be completed on Thursday:
Marian will lead a workshop in " Randicentiarianism " in which your main tool is a pencil; Shelley will lead a workshop that revisits the relationship between typography and graphic design where you remember what it's like to work with scissors and glue; and Ross will guide us through the final phase of our main 'Glyph' project, in which your main focus is technological process.
Type Boot Camp are sessions of brutally honest critique of your existing work. We won't scream at you, but we might make you do pushups for failing to use a proper em-dash. Bring two pieces of your best typographic work for critique and be prepared to salute.
Typographic Explorations take place in the late afternoons, where we will lead the mind to wander in this West Coast landscape with form-making on the mind. Leave the printed page behind and learn to communicate without words.
Evening discussions will center around the examination of existing print materials in three different genres. We will present comparative examples and you will question, opine, and argue the merits—or lack thereof—of each. These will send you reeling off into the night for more lucid typo-dreaming.
Thursday will be a day of work and play. After we finish our final projects and congratulate each other on our brilliant typographic solutions, the time to relax and party it up will commence with the singing of long ballads regarding the exploits of the vowels, line-o-type dancing, and gazing at the stars in the embrace of an upper case T.
