The Workshop
The Type Directors Club and Linotype have invited ten excellent, typographically-minded Junior or Senior students to participate in a typography intensive workshop celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of Adrian Frutiger's Univers. Students will work closely with typographic luminaries Akira Kobayashi and Matthew Carter to create and refine their own letterform designs. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to learn directly from celebrated masters of the art of typography.
Two students have been accepted from each of five New York design schools: Fashion Institute of Technology, the School of Visual Arts, Parsons the New School for Design, Pratt Institute, and The Cooper Union. Nominees are required to have taken at least one advanced typography course, and should have an active interest in the design of letterforms.
The workshop will begin on Saturday 10 November with a continental breakfast where the students will meet Akira Kobayashi. Lunch will be served. The workshop will continue on Sunday with Matthew Carter joining Mr. Kobayashi and the students.
All participants are required to bring a laptop with FontLab installed (a trial version of the software is available free of charge from the company's website). Participants should also bring pens, pencils, tracing paper, drawing paper, and/or a sketchbook (standard sketching/design materials). During the workshop, all participants will have access to a laser printer. On Monday evening, 12 November, TDC and Linotype will host a reception and a lecture by Kobayashi.
