The Theme :

Imagine iT is a celebration of history, practice, difference; and culture. All countries and cultures are unique: this is particularly obvious on a small continent such as Europe where each nation has developed is own original means of giving graphic visibility to these differences. The conference will give an overview of the various ways of making cultures, traditions and mentalities visible and unique, whilst still adhering to the universal traditions of type and graphic design.

Graphic design and typography are one of the oldest methods of communicating these differences. Why i.e. is Gill Sans popular in the UK but is seldom used in Germany? And: How can you give visual form to crisp Finnish clear air, or to the jealous temper of a Spanish lady? What kind of a job is it to transform these culturally different characteristics into a work of visual communication? The tradition of typography and the history of visual communication are the first two pillars of the conference.

Third pillar for the conference is how culture of differences applies to practice; craft and ability ('to achieve with your hand') allow to express the characteristics of a culture, also when cultures merge. The matrix of an identity is always regarded in its practical work. Which leads to the questions on the tools used: does technology give uniform international look, or can it help highlight regional differences?

Europe is growing to be a European Union of visual communication. Imagine iT will look at movement within European cultures and the migrating world of graphic design and typography. What about designers born in one country but working in another? What are the special aspects of migration? This being the fourth pillar of the conference.

Imagine iT is a celebration of imagination within the Latin alphabet, graphic design and communication around the world. Italy has been chosen as the venue for this conference as it stands at the root of typographic and graphic civilization.
