St Bride Printing Library Exhibition
:: Hans Schmoller : The Penguin Years

Penguin books is 70 in 2005! In celebration, this exhibition presents the work of Hans Schmoller (1916–85), one of the finest book typographers of the twentieth century and Head of Typography at Penguin 1949–76. Through the work shown it is hoped that the enormous contribution Schmoller made, not only to Penguin and its various imprints but to British publishing and design more widely, will be revealed to a whole new generation of typographers and designers.

We begin from 5.30pm in the Exhibition Room with a private view of this new exhibition which draws from collections of Schmoller's work across the country. Tanya Schmoller will then officially open the exhibition in the Bridewell Hall at 7:00pm. Our guest speakers for the evening are Jerry Cinamon and Phil Baines. All welcome to the private view.

Jerry Cinamon has had a long and distinguished career in British publishing, principally as Chief Designer at Penguin Books and as author of the recently-published biography of the letterer and type designer Rudolf Koch. He edited The Monotype Recorder devoted to Hans Schmoller (April 1987).

Phil Baines, designer and teacher, is currently writing Penguin by design: a cover story 1935-2005 (to be published by Allen Lane the Penguin Press in 2005). The picture researcher and designer of that book, and the curator of the exhibition is David Pearson. David is currently a designer at Penguin Books. His recent covers for the Great Ideas series have been featured extensively in the design press.
