:: Caryn Ami Radlove :: Graphic World of Paul Peter Piech

This lecture and the accompanying exhibition are about the politics of the personal, about one man who believed he could change the world. The political posters of the artist Paul Peter Piech can best be described in three words: graphic, prolific, passionate. From his Taurus Press, Piech produced thousands of linocut posters to promote his messages of peace and social justice. These intensely graphic posters are of a distinctive style influenced both by German Expressionism and Byzantine art. An American, Piech was a trained artist both in printing and advertising. He began his career working in London under the great British advertising artist, Ashley Havinden. In 1959 he started the Taurus Press, which eventually became the focus of his artistic and professional endeavours and the voice of his social and political messages. Piech died in 1996 but his work is still relevant. Of particular interest these days are his posters on Iraq. Piech embodies the spirit of grassroots political protest, from his methods of production to his methods of distribution. This lecture will summarize Piech's career and then focus on a small collection of his political posters.
