:: Se(x)-height : How Zoning Regulations Influenced Vernacular Sex Shop Signage in New York City
With Mayor Bloomberg currently considering an initiative to promote "designed" storefront signage throughout New York City, it is worth looking at the how sex shop signage changed during the Giuliani administration. Zoning regulations, introduced by the mayor to reduce the number of adult-oriented businesses, produced unexpected and even amusing changes in the words and images that covered the shops.
Urshula Barbour is a co-founder, with Paul Carlos, of the design studio Pure+Applied. Together they design books, exhibitions and magazines. Apart from design, her areas of interests include anthropology and public policy.
