Matter & Spirit : The Genesis and Evolution of the Book

Dates :

Thursday–Sunday 29 April – 2 May 2004

Venue :

Wells College
Aurora, New York

The Conference :

What do Donald Jackson, Suzanne Moore, Mark Dimunation, Heather McHugh, Priscilla Juvelis, Lynn Amlie, Carol Blinn, Theo Rehak, Michael & Winifred Bixler, Vincent FitzGerald, Donald Glaister, Jeff Dwyer, Daniel Kelm, Ruth Rogers, Katherine McCanless Ruffin, Zahra Partovi, Don Rash and Marshall Weber all have in common?

Not sure? Why not ask them all when you see them at the Wells Book Arts Center's upcoming symposium, Matter & Spirit: The Genesis and Evolution of the Book? Our symposium will take place at Wells College in Aurora, New York, from 29 April through 2 May 2004.

In addition to four demonstrations and eight presentations, the symposium will present a panel discussion on entrepreneurship in the book arts, sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. An exhibition highlighting the creative process in the book arts will accompany the symposium. Participants will also have the opportunity to take a tour of the Press & Letterfoundry of Michael & Winifred Bixler, one of the most important type casting shops (and working museums) in the nation.

A vendor fair for book artists, dealers, and suppliers will run concurrently to the symposium. Current vendors include the Booklyn Artists Alliance; Boxcar Press; Caliban Press; The Dale Guild Type Foundry; Vincent FitzGerald & Company; Granary Books; Hand Papermaking Inc.; J-D Press & Keepsake Bindery; Priscilla Juvelis, Inc.; Kat Ran Press; Oak Knoll Books & Oak Knoll Press; PABA · PhotoArt BookArt Gallery; Vamp & Tramp, Booksellers + Califia Books; and Warwick Press.
