The Exhibition :
Our knowledge of Russian avant-garde graphics tends to be dominated by a few names, mainly from Moscow, like Rodchenko, the Stenberg brothers, Lissitzky and Telingater. This exhibition, curated by the lecturer and author Catherine Cooke, presents something of the wider context of these peoples work in pre-revolutionary Russian printing and graphics and in the world of design and social change around them. It then continues through the Stalin period and up to Perestroika.

The Lecture and Exhibition :
Type design is a strange phenomenon. It is around us everywhere, yet it is hardly recognized as an applied art, and only accepted as an artistic achievement or as a design discipline by a rather small group of people. You, the reader of this announcement, probably belong to this group. In this lecture marking the opening of an exhibition of his work, Fred Smeijers will discuss what type design means for him. His activities cover a very wide area, ranging from historical research into the Garamond-like roman types of the sixteenth century, to the fonts in your mobile phone, and everything in between. For Smeijers, the role of a type designer is – like much else – on the move. But still he tries to look for common or continuing aspects, regardless of time or technique.
Copies of Fred Smeijer's new book Type now will be on sale after the lecture, and at the opening of the exhibition, at a special price. A percentage of each copy sold will be given to the Library.
