The Conversation :

John D. Berry and Saki Mafundikwa will be talking about two new books from Mark Batty Publisher : John's Contemporary Newspaper Design and Saki's Afrikan Alphabets. Each of the books was put together by its author/designer as an integrated presentation of content and image. John and Saki will show how these two projects came to fruition.

The Speakers :

Contemporary Newspaper Design John Berry is an editor and typographer who works both sides of the design/content divide. He is the former editor of U&lc, and edited the book Language Culture Type (ATypI/Graphis, 2002). He writes regularly on type for Creativepro.com. He is a former member of the board of directors of TDC. Contemporary Newspaper Design is a lively, highly visual study of the graphic evolution of some of the world's best-designed newspapers over the last fifteen years.

Afrikan Alphabets Saki Mafundikwa is a graphic designer, typographer, and design educator. He holds an MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University and worked and taught in New York City before returning to his country Zimbabwe to found that country's first graphic design and new media college, the Zimbabwe Institute of Vigital Arts (ZIVA). Afrikan Alphabets is an eye-opening introduction to the wealth of graphic writing systems, alphabetic and otherwise, that have been developed by Africans both throughout history and in comparatively recent times. The book is a visual feast, both descriptive and very personal.
