The Presentation :
The Grolier lecture will center around the history of American penmanship, a significant part of of Americana forgotten by the history books. I will talk about how a Colonial student was taught to write, use of the quill and early American penmanship styles (mainly, they were English).
The crux of the lecture will be the 19th century, Platt Rogers Spencer, his Spencerian system and the distinctly American style of penmanship that became the Golden Age of American Penmanship, 1850-1940. Also examined will be the two factors that brought penmanship to the masses: commercial production of paper and the steel pen, both in the first quarter of the 1800s.
About The Presenter :
Robert Hurford is a graphic artist and historian of the Golden Age of American Penmanship. An active member of the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH), Bob is also editor of IAMPETH's own magazine, the IAMPETH Penman's Journal.
