The Workshop :

John Downer, a professional type designer and lettering artist, will teach letterform proportions, optical weight adjustment & spacing. He will demonstrate both with a lettering brush and on the computer. Font editing software: Fontographer & TypeTool. Students need no prior lettering experience, but proficiency on the computer is a prerequisite.

Also, students should bring to class original sketches for the letters H,D,O and n,o,p to scan. (No tracings or copies of previously-published type, please. All drawings should be first-generation artwork: pencil on paper.) Students may bring their own laptops to class, provided that a licensed copy of both Fontographer and TypeTool is installed. No unlicensed copies of these font programs will be permitted.

Mr. Tal Leming of House Industries will assist with the teaching. Tal is coauthor of RoboFab, a type design toolkit utilizing both Python scripting and FontLab. He is a typographic designer, a type designer, and a font technology specialist.
