About the Lecture :
This is just to remind you that Friends of St Bride Printing Library are
delighted to be able to invite you on behalf of Mark Batty Publishers (New
York) to a party to celebrate the launch of their most recent title: Tart
Cards, written by Caroline Archer.
If you are from out of town and unfamiliar with these things, tart cards are
the means by which London prostitutes advertise their services and they have
become as ubiquitous a symbol of that city as the red telephone boxes in
which they are found.
The book is written from a designer's perspective, and the author gives a
tour through the cards over the past twenty years. For anyone interested in
printing and graphic design the cards displayed in the book form a microcosm
of evolving typographic tastes and techniques; they are wonderful examples
of ephemeral, vernacular design in London which are presented in a
colourful, informative and objective way.
In addition to the book launch and the opportunity to view the book itself,
there will also be a Tart Card exhibition.
