The talk will briefly explain the photographic collection of lettering in the environment I began around 1992. As this grew, I became more and more aware of the various footsteps I was treading in, Jock Kinneir, Alan Bartram, James Mosley and crucially -- because of my involvement with the Central Lettering Record -- Nicolete Gray. My appreciation of her contribution to this field increased after Catherine Dixon began her PhD work at college, and she too began to take photographs of similar subject material.

The main part of the talk will focus on Lisbon and a project we are currently involved with. At the invitation of Robin Fior we were asked to document places recorded by Nicolete on various visits to the city during the 1960s. What we saw there amazed us, so many survivals, and so many 'local' lettering styles and ways of fabricating letters. The slides shown will attempt to show something of the the range of what we saw as well as a selection of the 'then and now' photographs.

Copies of Signs, lettering in the environment, by Phil Baines & Catherine Dixon, will be on sale at the discounted price of £20 (profits from sales will go to the Friends of St Bride Printing Library).

So, please join us for what promises to be a lively and visually very engaging evening.

Tickets on sale at the door: £5 (to include a glass of wine!) or £3 for concessions.
