  Now What?

Now What?

The world's only conference devoted to magazine design is happening in New York.

Register before March 31 to save $100 off the standard registration. Details are on the Society of Publication Designers web site: http://www.spd.org

The Conference :

Already more than 200 of the most interesting designers in the field have signed up, as speakers, workshop leaders and as participants for . . . the Magazine Design Conference. You know them. The art directors of Details, The New York Times Magazine and Vanity Fair, to name a few.

Four of the dozens of presentations that will be posted on the site:

Time Inc: The Survivors
Steve Hoffman (Sports Illustrated) and Arthur Hochstein (Time).
Avant Garde Magazines of the 20th Century
Steve Heller (The New York Times)
What now?
Neville Brody . . . and David Carson
The DNA of Magazines
Fred Woodard (GQ)

And there is more: Presentations of type and photography by the art directors of Vibe, Real Simple, Dwell, Interview and many others. Extraordinary live workshops on type design (Jonathan Hoefler), illustration (Jim McMullen) and logo design (Jim Parkinson). Plus Russell Brown -- and some of his colleagues from Adobe -- on the tricks and traps of Photoshop, InDesign and InCopy. There'll be business and career seminars, exhibits, free type books, a scholarly design tour of Manhattan, visits to famous magazines and the studios of our best-known practitioners.

And maybe the best part: innumerable chances to meet and talk to peers, heroes, and a few you might even be a bit jealous of. In the relaxed setting of this fine hotel: buffet breakfasts, hour-long coffee breaks, informal lunches (all included in the conference price). Then, lavish cocktail receptions at cool New York spots, culminating in a boat ride to historic Ellis Island for the annual SPD Awards Gala, Friday, May 16, 2003.

Already the designers who have registered form a list just as impressive as the speakers. This is destined to be the most memorable weekend that I can remember. It's going to be a two-way conference, an intimate social event in an elegant setting. As a result there is a limit to the number of participants we can invite. At the rate we are going, the registration will be closed in early April.
