Cooper Union Workshops : John Downer : Speedball Pen and Show Card Brush Lettering
This spring and summer Cooper Union is offering a number of intensive workshops taught by exception instuctor artists including this one which could be particularly interesting to those who design type or use hand lettering styles in signage.

Back by popular demand, with new and different commercial lettering styles of special interest to font designers and graphic designers, this workshop will concentrate on alphabets commonly used for showcards and ads. Students will learn layout, letter formation, and brush manipulation. A slide presentation will show outstanding examples of the hand-letterer's art. The techniques taught will use India ink applied with a Speedball pen, and tempera paint (non-toxic) applied with a red sable brush. No prior brush lettering experience is required, but students should have taken at least one class in calligraphy or pen lettering.

Instructor Bio:
John Downer, MA and MFA, The University of Iowa. He has been a commercial sign painter for 30 years and has lectured on sign painting throughout the U.S. and Europe. His other professional activities include lettering, glass gilding, type design, typography, and logo design.
