Cooper Union : Carl Rohr Workshop :
My Favorite Dead Lettering Artists
Date :
Saturday and Sunday, 6-7 December 2003, 10am-4pm
Venue :
The Cooper Union 30 Cooper Square New York, NY 10003
The Workshop :
Ray DaBoll, Walter Brudi, Rudolf Koch, Alfred Linz, Oldrich Menhart, Herbert Post, George Salter, Ernst Schneidler, Villu Toots, Georg Trump. Never mind the flippancy of the title; these are some of Carl Rohrs' biggest heroes. Most of them were type designers, most of them were teachers (Salter here at Cooper Union), and all of them were calligraphers of startling originality.
Recent digging has unearthed more of the work of some of these geniuses. This course examines hard-to-find examples of work from each of them and combine it with modern calligraphic moves from all of our tools—flat pen, flat brush, pointed brush & ruling pen to expand your own repertoire of styles and flavor and help us find your own unique paths, whether for calligraphy or for drawn lettering and type design.
All of these men came up with new ways of using hands centuries-old as well as their own completely original styles that have been hiding from you for 50 years and more—some that retain the marvelous feeling of their time and some that look as fresh as today. Students learn to use some of the most original and powerful lettering from the nooks and crannies of the twentieth century to discover a vision and style in the twenty-first.
