Two of the distinguished judges of the TDC2 2002 Type Design Competition will talk about type and lettering, and the how these affect their work.
John Downer
John Downer is a sign painter by trade, with a specialty in gold leaf lettering. He began his career as a freelance type designer in 1983. Many of his typefaces have been published by Emigre, Bitstream, Font Bureau and Design Lab. He also writes about type and type history.
At Judges' Night, he will demonstrate his sign lettering skills by creating a banner on paper.
Mr Downer holds an MA in Fine Art (Washington State U), and both an MA and MFA from the University of Iowa.
Jill Bell
How I Inadvertently Became a Type Designer
A brief look at some of my work including the development of a few selected lettering and logotype jobs , how (and why) I was scouted by a type developer, and how I currently get ideas for, develop and market my fonts.
Ms Bell holds a BA in English Literature (UCLA) and a Certificate in Advertising / Graphic Design (Otis/Parsons)
