Focusing on typefaces from all over Europe done mostly in the 1930s and 50s, when tremendously distinctive letters were being cast in metal. You will see the original calligraphic studies by designers from Koch to Trump to Hoefer, the resulting types -- many displayed in the original foundry brochures announcing their release -- and finally, contemporary calligraphic interpretations by modern day hotshots.

About the Workshop :

Calligraphy, of course, has always been an important inspiration for typography. Now, we'll turn that around by examining dozens of 20th century European calligraphic-based types as the starting points for our hand-made letters. Reproducing type increases calligraphic dexterity, sharpening eye, hand and mind. Using them as inspiration in combination with modern calligraphic techniques* fosters interpretive ingenuity and will lead you to designing your own unique letterforms. We'll be covering obvious classics like Legende, Neuland, Post Antiqua and Hammer's Uncials as well as the more obscure and eccentric like Trump's and G.G. Lange's scripts, Menhart's Romans and Uncial, and many more. The handouts include seventy-five fonts -- your repertoire will be expanded dramatically. Despite the impression the title may give, nary a blackletter will be covered. Let's not tell Ward Dunham.

* These modern moves will be one of the primary focuses of the class, so if the typeface angle doesn't strike your fancy, the pen and brush handling just might.

About Carl Rohrs :

Carl Rohrs has been a free-lance lettering artist and sign painter in Santa Cruz since 1977. He teaches lettering at Cabrillo College and workshops for unsuspecting calligraphy societies. His hobbies include typographic errors and spilling paint on good clothes.
