There’s More to Life than Books, But Not Much More
We will be discussing books as our first love, with our other work and projects filling out our dance cards as additional fun and inspiration.
Coralie Bickford-Smith was born in Norwich, Norfolk in 1974. She graduated from Reading University in 1998 after studying Typography and Graphic Communication and has worked in-house at Penguin Books since 2002. Coralie’s book covers have been recognised by the AIGA (NY) and D&AD (UK) and have featured in a numerous international magazines and newspapers including The New York Times, Vogue and The Guardian. She was also selected as one of the rising stars in British Publishing by The Bookseller, 2011
Her work with Penguin Classics on the clothbound series attracted worldwide attention and harks back to the world of Victorian bindings and a golden age of book binding. The London-based designer chose to disregard the usual paper jacket for a cloth hardback that features foil stamped patterns.
More recently her F. Scott Fitzgerald series, which features metallic art deco designs, made design lovers and bookworms alike fall in love with Bickford-Smith’s beautiful and thoughtful work.
“I want these book covers to be cherished as much as the literature inside,” says Bickford-Smith of her obsessive attention to detail. “If something is well considered, it will entice. People want to explore it, feel it. That design shines through and connects.”
Kelly Blair Kelly Blair art directs, designs and illustrates. When not doing work for clients, including Random House, Picador, St. Martin’s Press, Knopf, Penguin Books, Houghton Mifflin, W. W. Norton, Vintage, The New York Times, Time Magazine, Oprah Magazine and BusinessWeek Magazine, she can be found collaborating with her studio-mates on projects at the bread + butter shop and video blogging what she sees, in 15 second increments. She recently began working in-house as a senior designer for the art department at Knopf, which she’s very excited about.
